SHREVEPORT, LA – Two parents are behind bars after a 15-year-old girl was found living alone in deplorable conditions inside a Shreveport hotel room for nearly two weeks.

On April 2, 2025, officers with the Shreveport Police Department’s Youth Services Bureau responded to a disturbing call at the Royal Inn, located at 1906 N. Market Street.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a teenage girl who had reportedly been left unsupervised in the hotel room for approximately 14 days.
According to officers, the child appeared disheveled, emitted a strong odor due to poor hygiene, and admitted she had not bathed in two weeks.

She told police her mother, identified as Angela Herring (DOB: 05/30/1974), left the hotel over a week ago with the words, “I love you, be back soon,” and never returned. The teen also revealed that she had been surviving by finding food on her own.

The teen further explained that her father, Carey Herring (DOB: 11/24/1972), had been banned from the property and had not been seen in weeks. Hotel management confirmed that Mr. Herring was removed from the premises on or about March 19, 2025.

Perhaps most alarming, the child disclosed that she had not been enrolled in or attended school in approximately three years.

Child Protective Services (CPS) was immediately contacted. A Gingerbread assessment and drug screening were conducted.
Based on the findings, detectives with SPD’s Youth Services Bureau obtained warrants for both Angela and Carey Herring on charges of Improper Supervision of a Juvenile and Criminal Neglect of Family.
Both individuals have since been arrested and booked into the Caddo Correctional Center. The investigation remains ongoing.
