SHREVEPORT, La. – A Shreveport man has been arrested and charged with cruelty to a juvenile after police say he physically assaulted his 7-year-old son with a piece of lumber.

The incident occurred on April 9, 2025, shortly after 6:00 p.m., when Shreveport Police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 6000 block of Tealwood Street in response to a report of child abuse.
Upon arrival, officers found a young boy with visible injuries consistent with physical abuse. The child was later transported to a local hospital by private vehicle for medical evaluation and treatment.
According to investigators, the assault reportedly began after the child received a “C” grade in conduct at school.
The child’s father, identified as Winston Taylor, allegedly struck the boy multiple times with a 1×2 wooden board, hitting him on the face, back, buttocks, and legs.
Detectives with the Shreveport Police Department’s Juvenile Crimes Division responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.
While officers were still on-site, Taylor returned to the residence and was taken into custody without incident. After interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence, authorities determined that the injuries were consistent with the reported method of assault.
Taylor was booked on one count of Cruelty to a Juvenile.
The Shreveport Police Department issued a reminder to parents that while discipline is a part of parenting, it must be conducted within legal and safe boundaries. The use of objects to physically discipline a child is strongly discouraged and can result in criminal charges if it causes harm or leaves lasting injuries.
