Shreveport’s crime statistics reveal a notable decline across various categories as the city progresses through 2024.
As of August 27th, the Shreveport Police Department reported 40 homicides, 1,757 shots fired incidents, 204 shootings, 70 rapes, 747 vehicle thefts, 104 robberies, 803 burglaries, and 905 vehicle burglaries.
During the Shreveport City Council Meeting on August 28th, Police Chief Wayne Smith announced a significant reduction in crime rates compared to the same period in 2023.
According to Chief Smith, homicides have decreased by 34%, shots fired incidents are down by 9%, and shootings have dropped by 14%. Additionally, rapes have decreased by 23%, vehicle thefts by 7%, robberies by 23.5%, burglaries by 17%, and vehicle burglaries by 34%.
Chief Smith credited much of this progress to the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), which has played a crucial role in monitoring and responding to crime throughout the city. The RTCC currently oversees over 1,588 camera feeds citywide, with the number expected to reach 1,600 by the end of the week. Notably, more than 1,300 business cameras in the Shreveport area have been successfully integrated into the RTCC’s monitoring system.
The continued expansion and integration of surveillance technology have been key in assisting law enforcement to respond more effectively to criminal activity, contributing to the overall decrease in crime across Shreveport.
