LOUISIANA — Several prominent news media organizations have filed a lawsuit against the state of Louisiana on Wednesday, July 31st, challenging the constitutionality of a newly enacted 25-foot police buffer zone law.
The plaintiffs in this legal action include Verite News, Gannett, Gray Local Media, Nexstar Media, Scripps Media, and Tegna.
Notably, Gray Local Media operates KSLA 12, and Nexstar Media owns KTAL 6.
The lawsuit argues that the buffer zone law infringes on the fundamental rights of journalists by severely limiting their ability to cover critical news events.
According to the news organizations, the law’s restrictions could prevent reporters from observing and documenting interactions between police officers and protesters, as well as from recording audio of significant events involving law enforcement.
The plaintiffs contend that such limitations undermine the public’s right to be informed and hinder the media’s role in providing comprehensive coverage of crucial issues.
