SHREVEPORT, La — On Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at 10:43am Love Shreveport-Bossier reported a possible jumper on the Shreveport-Barksdale bridge.

In the midst of challenging weather conditions, over 13 units from the Shreveport Fire Department responded to a critical rescue call. Their search was hampered by the severe weather, making their task even more arduous.
Amid this tragedy, the family of Vicky Copeland, the woman who had jumped, reached out to Love Shreveport-Bossier with heartfelt messages. Nancy, a family member, expressed their gratitude and shared an important message:
“Hi, will you let the people know that the lady Vicky Copeland who jumped, her body was recovered at Lock and Dam No. 5. The family sends their gratitude and thanks for all the prayers and help. Please check on your loved ones; you never know what they’re going through alone. Thank you all.”
Nancy continued, emphasizing the importance of awareness, “Awareness needs to be known because we don’t know what the next person is going through unless we let it out there.“
Love Shreveport-Bossier is grateful to Vicky Copeland’s family for allowing this story to be shared. In the media, there’s often hesitation to report on suicides unless they involve public figures. However, this approach overlooks the crucial need to address mental health openly rather than hiding it away.
Every day, heartbreaking stories of suicide pass by, unheard and untold, as families discover the loss of their loved ones. These stories deserve to be shared, not shunned. We hear so much gut wrenching stories on this scanner.
We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Vicky Copeland’s family. May you find peace and comfort in the days ahead.
