Shreveport, LA — A Caddo Parish jury has found 37-year-old Andrew Drew Adaway guilty of second-degree murder in the violent beating death of 72-year-old Bobbie Young inside the Shreveport City Jail.

The unanimous verdict was delivered Tuesday, July 22, 2025, by a five-man, seven-woman jury in the courtroom of District Judge Donald Hathaway Jr. Jurors deliberated for less than an hour. Adaway is scheduled for sentencing on August 7, 2025, where he faces a mandatory life sentence at hard labor without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
The fatal incident occurred on June 3, 2022. Prosecutors say Young had been arrested on drug charges and brought to the jail just before Adaway, who had been booked for simple assault. Although Adaway was compliant during booking, he became upset when placed in a group cell.
Moments later, Adaway launched a brutal attack, repeatedly striking Young in the head with a closed fist. Young was rushed to Ochsner LSU Health, but despite emergency surgery, he succumbed to his injuries on June 20, 2022, due to severe brain trauma.
During the trial, Assistant District Attorneys Christopher Bowman and Jason Waltman called nine witnesses to present evidence against Adaway. Defense attorneys Harry Johnson and Hillary Hileman represented the defendant.
The case was filed under docket No. 389905.
